Byerwen Coal - Stage 2 Expansion

Mining Infrastructure

Shadforth have successfully delivered complex mining and heavy infrastructure projects across Queensland and New South Wales, supporting major resource operations through civil construction, road infrastructure, drainage, retaining structures, major earthworks, civil works for coal loading facilities, and operational upgrades.

Working within live mining environments, our teams have delivered projects requiring large-scale earthworks, specialised construction methodologies, accelerated programs, and ongoing coordination with operational stakeholders to maintain safety, productivity, and uninterrupted site access.

Our mining infrastructure capability includes:

  • Construction of reinforced earth retaining walls, drainage systems, stockpile expansions, and bulk earthworks packages.

  • Delivery of heavy vehicle access roads, pavement rehabilitation, and bituminous surfacing works.

  • Construction of tunnel and conveyor infrastructure within constrained mining environments.

  • Construction of flood-resilient crossings designed for heavy mining equipment and wet weather performance.

  • Stabilisation and reconstruction works across challenging ground conditions and steep terrain.

Recent project experience includes:

  • Byerwen Coal Stage 2 Expansion – Major civil works supporting mine expansion activities within a live operational environment.

  • Newlands Bebo Arch Crossing – Construction of a flood-resilient crossing designed to accommodate 300-tonne coal haulers.

  • Poitrel Access Road Upgrade – Reconstruction and stabilisation works delivered under half-road closures to maintain mine access.

  • Mt Carlton Mine Tailings Tunnel – Installation of a 42.3m reclaim tunnel and associated conveyor infrastructure.

  • Boggabri Stockpile Expansion – Delivery of bulk earthworks, retaining walls, pavement construction, and drainage infrastructure within a compressed program.

  • Hobartville Road Upgrade – Upgrade of 28km of rural road infrastructure to support mining operations and road train access.

Challenges and Innovations

Shadforth’s mining projects are often delivered in highly constrained environments where operational continuity, safety, and environmental management are critical to project success.

Across these projects, our teams successfully managed:

  • Construction within active mining operations while maintaining site access and minimising disruption

  • Wet weather impacts, flood-prone environments, and challenging ground conditions

  • Accelerated delivery programs and complex staging requirements

  • Heavy haul infrastructure requirements, including crossings and pavements designed for oversized mining equipment

  • Coordination of multiple trades, subcontractors, and operational stakeholders across remote and live work sites

Our approach combines practical construction expertise with innovative delivery methods to improve constructability, durability, and efficiency. This has included the use of specialised stabilisation techniques, waterproofing systems, alternative construction methodologies, and material reuse strategies to enhance long-term performance and reduce project impacts.

Through collaborative delivery and self-perform capability, Shadforth continues to provide reliable infrastructure solutions that support ongoing mining operations and future expansion across regional Australia.
