Isles of Newport
Scope of Works
Shadforth successfully delivered the major civil and earthworks package for Isles of Newport, a 144-hectare residential and commercial development on the Redcliffe Peninsula comprising of approximately 2,000 dwellings. Delivered in partnership with Stockland, the project’s centrepiece is a 22-hectare communal lake connected to Moreton Bay via a lock and weir system, forming the foundation of a unique waterside community.
Commencing in 2015 and with completion in 2025, Shadforth delivered works across all 68 civil stages, comprising of large-scale bulk earthworks, road construction, drainage, wetland infrastructure and revetment walls. In total, more than $234 million of earthworks and civil construction was delivered, supporting the staged release of residential and commercial precincts while maintaining program certainty and quality outcomes.
Challenges and Innovations
Isles of Newport presented significant environmental and technical challenges, including extensive acid sulphate soils, marine mud layers and construction immediately adjacent to RAMSAR-listed wetlands, Jabiru Canal and Moreton Bay. Shadforth implemented tailored construction methodologies, environmental controls and water management strategies to mitigate risk while maintaining productivity and compliance.
Innovative approaches were adopted to improve sustainability outcomes and deliver value for the client. This included alternative ground treatment methodologies to replace traditional preload and wick drain designs, reuse of site-won materials for road subgrade construction, and the delivery of a recycled asphalt product incorporating reclaimed materials into pavement construction. These initiatives improved material efficiency, increased reuse of existing resources, and reduced disposal requirements, supporting Stockland’s sustainability objectives.
The Newport development has since been recognised through industry awards for excellence in masterplanned communities.
